Plot
The city of New Rome is pitted against the duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who espouses a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved, partly because of his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after filming 30 hours of second unit footage and holding a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was abandoned after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicts” the attacks. Coppola completely abandoned the project in 2007 and only started developing it again in 2019. At 21:40, the character Catiline utters the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” in astonishment. Yet, within the universe, the city of New Rome comes from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, the dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The will of Cronus”, or at 01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is prominently displayed, while there are many other representations of Roman deities). There is no reason for Catiline to use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” and in such a context.

I desperately wanted to be part of the minority who enjoyed Megalopolis. However, what a horrible nightmare; or perhaps a fever dream is more accurate. There is no doubt that the set of ideas that make up Francis Ford Coppola’s “masterpiece” is a true work of art.

The problem is the execution of these ideas and the dialogue that ties them together. I am obsessed with the idea of New Rome and all these quasi-Roman characters plotting against each other like a Shakespearean Game of Thrones. But listening to Adam Driver quote Hamlet and then immediately say “in the clurrrrb” and Jon Voight say “boner” is just unforgivable. I kind of understand the plot of Megalopolis, but I can’t even begin to understand why any character does what they say or do. The amount of talent that was wasted on what must be one of the most beautiful and breathtaking sets in history is disrespectfully baffling. That being said, I will probably subject myself to one more viewing of Megalopolis, just to be sure that the experience was so exhausting.
