In times of war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, the woman finds and rescues a little girl, which brings an irrevocable change to the lives of the couple and those whose paths will cross with the girl. A time when humanity simply gave up on grey war, where the world witnessed the extent of human cruelty. A time where rebirth, redemption and peace were promised. Faith’s hand has just struck Europe in the most gruesome and usual way, with the enormous debt of a great war and a lost generation towering over it. The world has stopped, not because of Schick, or at least not only because of him, but because of what lies beneath. Ahead of what is the world’s greatest tragedy up to that point lies an increasingly bleak future. Germany was in ruins – it had just lost a war, the faith of its people and the power of its empire. Revenge was sworn for the humiliation. A few years after that remarkably dark period, there lived a humble, elderly German carpenter couple. The man goes to cut down big trees and the woman ties the small branches together. Both spend a hard day’s work to reach a small house in the middle of the forest where soup and a tired old dog await them. The woman, who has never had children, begs for all she has, having abandoned God or never having caught up with Him. She prays to heaven, to wood and even to the train gods for a train. And one day the train gods answered her prayers. In that empty corner of the forest, a train was rolling through the white winter snow, slowly but surely arriving at its dreaded destination. And one day a baby is thrown from the train only to be picked up by the old woodswoman. A heartless thing to some, but not to her. What follows is a beautifully realized tragedy, a story of humanity: the loving force within it that builds and sacrifices itself and its inherently evil side that avenges and punishes. Michel Hazanavicius’ animated film borrows a very comic style that places you in the heart of an enchanted forest, along with its quirky set of characters and the grim setting of the second world war, it is one of the most beautiful horror films of the year. idiots.
